Definitely a rare item, in a rail-joiner box.

I should have read one of my "Connecting Ties" boxes before replying, not rail joiners.
Here is my contribution to "unusual boxed items" a 1588TX 4 wheel gunmetal tender. Not sure what it would go with.....maybe a gunmetal 289E? I have it behind my gunmetal 1684.

Some other unusual boxes, but not super-rare, just interesting.
3 in the first pix are "over-labeled" and the 2613 box has the 2 stamped in front of the printed 613.
The 2nd pix are over-labeled and a regular 1689T boxes.

Neat stuff.

Jim - the 601/602 boxes are overlabeled because they have the wrong numbers on them. I had a boxed set with those a while back. Grey and red cars. I don't remember exact mistake but it was like 602 on the observation rather than the baggage.

Here's an 88 rheostat box repurposed for a 0209 BARREL SET.

Jim, the 1588TX in GM is super rare..I had this set, boxed..came with a 1689E and 1692/93 blue tin passenger cars..my set made it to Bob Robinson then sold broken up at Cabin Fever a year or so ago?..set 6206E if I remember..here is a pic of the tender.. pretty sure a Sears set..It was a set I had on display at Atlantic Div TCA show, Bob saw and wanted it bad, so sold..wish I kept..

Thanks for the info on the 1588TX GM. Good to know that another exists.
I have always been interested in tenders, as the tender can define the set. There are so many interesting variations, in order to mate certain cars with certain locos.
Another odd gunmetal tender that I have is a 260T with diecast top, nickel trim, brass LL plate and latch coupler. I am guessing that it was made for an early gunmetal 260E. It came to me alone.
The finish has wear as you can see, and thick paint chips imply to me that it was dip-painted, as were most pre-1935 trains. It is unusual for gunmetal finish to be applied in a manner other than spraying.

Larry, It always seems kind of sad and tragic to me when boxed sets are broken up.
