Marx William Crooks repair
« on: January 31, 2021, 01:42:51 PM »
Have never rebuilt a William Crooks but many other Marx motors. Just wondering about the drivers, if they come off and go back on as easily as the Baldwin drivers, Also right now I notice the drive rods go opposite one another, is this common? Should I pair them the same?

I would have to check one, but the drive rods could be same, halved or quartered, real train drive rods are quartered, meaning each is 90 degrees off from the other. You should be able to drive the wheels off with a punch and re-install with a vise. Make sure they do not wobble and they must be aligned or the side-rods will bind.

Thanks, these drivers were halved. I have it all pulled apart, doing a thorough tune up, I’m going to place the drivers the same and see how that works out. Thanks for the input.

After full motor tune up and replacement of smoking unit. I had to fix the light box as it was broken as well. I ended up placing the drive rods going the same direction, it runs great. Very happy with my first William Crooks set. I'm wondering, is there something missing from the front boiler under the lamp?

I have a video of this train on my rumble account. Just go to rumble.com and look me up: cndctr111

It's not smoking much, I'm waiting for a filling bottle to come in, has a needle end which will allow me to get the fluid right into the smoking unit rather than all over the place.

Best, Dino

I was able to watch your video on Rumble. There are some interesting topics discussed on that platform. I will have to explore it more.
I liked seeing your Wm Crooks run.
