Marx Army Train 5928
« on: May 13, 2020, 10:51:11 AM »
Primarily for Jim, I have a nice army depot box with deck but no trains.  It is not listed in the Greenberg Sets Guide (5927 and 5929 are).  Any idea of the components that make up this set?

Very difficult to say exactly, but same era trains as the 2 set numbers that bracket it. If the larger size box, it would have more track, switches and maybe an unloading ramp car, possibly even the camouflaged tunnel. Smaller size box would be a more-typical consist, possibly some soldiers of fortune thrown in. If the box has dividers, it would help as tank-flats, airplane cars, ramp cars required a larger compartment. The combinations can be endless, considering 3 different locos (CV, 897 and 500) 2 different tenders and assortment of cars. Sorry could not be of more help, but a boxed set would have to surface to answer, and even then, dealers could swap cars according to a customer's wants. J

I just looked and I have boxed sets 5926G, 5924 and an empty 5926 box. They have typical consists with a 500 loco and tender.

Jim, the box is so nice, I'm going to fill it (for the time being) with the following (plus a note inside indicating this is a put together set, not to be viewed as an authentic boxed set:

897 loco and all  500 olive tender, Search light red handle, sparkling litho tank on flat, anti aircraft gun, and illuminated radio car (no antennas).  Deck is near new in appearance.  I have an extra flag pole with red wood base, some soldiers of fortune, and an extra tent with flags.  These components seem in step, sort of, with the sets 5927 and 5929.

Should you encounter a legitimate set, let me know so I can correct the fill.  Thanks!

It sounds like a possible set to me, as long as the 897 is electric not clockwork. Also the radio car is the Pullman type, not the observation type. Radio cars without antennas are usually for clockwork sets on frames with sliding tab couplers. I think when tents show up with these sets they are Britons. J

Jim, I mistyped, the "radio car" is the official car with the red illuminated tail end.

In regards to your comment about tents...would be interesting to know which are Marx, which others.  I have a prized set, the Firestone set that includes the "critter" along with a dozen prone soldiers, three tents, two canopied airplanes, etc.  These are definitely Marx as the entire set came complete from the original owner.

I always thought the cloth tents with card-stock bottoms were Brittons. I could, of course, be wrong, or possibly Brittons provided these to Marx.
