need another way to couple a Lionel prewar 226E
« on: December 22, 2022, 10:42:59 AM »
Does anyone have a coupler that will mate a prewar box coupler with a postwar knuckle coupler?

I want to pull postwar freight cars with my new 226E which has a very high box coupler?

There is an adapter made that fits over the spike on the prewar coupler and the other end will couple to a knuckle. It has been a while since I have seen one. Can you just mount a prewar truck in one end of one of your postwar cars?

You need a Lionel Coupler Adapter TS-162 or TS-100. Looks like the -162 is for high couplers like used on the 2226W tender. If your tender says 2226WX you need the lower -100.

Here's photos:

Here's eBay listings for them:

Thanks for the information. I thought someone would have already address this. I got both adapters from TrainZ. Looking forward to the 226E pulling the two bay hoppers on the S&B RR soon. The 226e is so beautiful. Thanks again Jim.

This will give me time to collect the correct prewar cars for the 226E. You have allot of them JIm. The price look good too.

I see that Terry has beat me to the punch on this problem too. Never mind my post on the other thread, sounds like you have the problem solved.

Jim made me a transition car using a Lionel 6555 single dome tank car. This idea was to replace the TT-162 with the new car. I'm wanting to pull 14 single dome metal tank cars and my layout is not that big. However, it should work. With the Lionel coupler adapter (TT-162) the 226E worked out great pull the tank cars. But with the 6555-transition car I had trouble. I think there were three problems that gave me the trouble.

1. 226E tenders box coupler is higher than a postwar coupler.
2. Pulling the 14 metal single dome tank cars have to go through two 90 degree 031 cures and a 45 degree 031 curve.
3. The transition cars (6555) postwar coupler was lower and didn't mate up well with the car behind it.

I made a video of the fix. Biggest thing I did was add allot of lead inside the tank of the 6555.

You can see the first tank car twisting at the 5:50 mark. That might be the couplers are too tight?

I like those tanks too. I put the ratty ones aside as I get them and then paint them in other roadnames. I just ordered more decals to do the cars I have on hand from protocraft.com

The single dome tank cars are my favorite. The look so nice when done. The flying shoe are the best. Trucks are real good.

The flying shoe and other sliding shoe trucks can be a problem on switches, especially 072 and on UCS tracks. They can make temporary contact on a switch hot rail and open the coil coupler, or worse jam and cause a derailment. I am sure this is why we often see plungers or other coupler operating parts removed and couplers wired in the closed position.

Steam engines are not a problem. I just use an appropriate tender. Some tenders are adjusted to take higher level cars too.
I shop around for old tenders just for that purpose.
