This is the super rare variation with press-on lettering and stack.
I have had a hard time lately, trying to sell an original for half that price.

His train lot for $5550.00 seems like a real bargain. I wonder if you get the window AC unit in one picture too, for that price.

I didn't even notice it had a chimney. The smokestack is what makes it rare. Lionel didn't do stacks until  the 00 caboose came out in '38. 

Been slow on eBay lately.

I did buy the dog a holloween costume on eBay. I only think of ebay as a place for trains, but they have all kinds of other stuff on there too.

Here's a fairly nice 156 with pedestal headlight. It has later couplers.

 

It's actually worse than it looks because the scratches are so old the bare metal has darkened.

I don't have a 156 with pedestal light and late couplers. I have a 156X with ped. light and riveted couplers, and a 12 wheeler pedestal light, riveted couplers and gold painted vents. But I have enopugh dark green locos so I won't be bidding.

That's a 254E with the E on the door and a 3-position e-unit mounted sideways. I doubt it came in that box.

Here's a GUNMETAL 1684 for $46. That is one of the rarest prewar locos. No tender. Some scratches.

Here's a dark olive 38 loco with a strap headlight. Dark olive is an early color for the 38. Not very good shape, but maybe good enough until you spot a good one.

Here's an odd color 265E being sold in the UK on Invaluable. Also a 4 BILD--LOCO in green!

The 265E is repainted - there should not be paint on the rivet for the crank.

That's a gray 4. Very hard to find. A rare export version of the gray 4 is known with Made in USA on frame and 254 stamped on the ends over the doors. Might be one of them, but you can't tell from the photos.

Stout has a nice auction coming up on the 20th.

There are some great things there. Fantastic collection. I don't see a depth of variations, but lots of rarities.

Is that the same stamp the 800 boxcars get? Just by looking at the loco it seems to be from about 1912-16 era. I think the wire hand reverse lever means earlier like 1912-13, but otherwise there aren't enough changes between 1912 and 1916 to date things.

Terry, It's not the same stamp used on the 800 boxcar. The one on the 38 is larger and also a different font.

Neat. That means it might be from 1912/13 rather than later. I'm going to throw a bid at it.

There is also a gunmetal 2666T tender - the plastic one.

 

I had two or three different people ask me if I'd ever heard of a gray plastic tender at the recent TCA convention. The loco is messed up - brass screws on the rods? But if the tender is seen as being real, it might bring a boatload of cash.

I saw that grey 156. Wonderful.

A year ago I would have been after it.  Today I'd rather have the standard gauge. Unfortunately, I don't have unlimited money.
